You won't be disappointed.Saturday Night Live has featured many recurring characters that appear in sketches with a musical theme. Score: 3 out of 10 The Bottom Line If you want more Will Ferrell goofiness, by all means, pick this disc up. Extras include two amusing dress rehearsal sketches, an off-air performance from Green Day (that includes Will Ferrell rockin' the cowbell) and a photo gallery. Score: 7 out of 10 Extras and Packaging This single-disc DVD comes packed in a black case with artwork consistent with other SNL "Best Of" releases.
A sketch-based comedy series need only be mixed with stereo in mind. The disc rarely makes use of its 5.1 sound field, but that's not particularly surprising. Score: 7 out of 10 Languages and Audio Audio choices are English Dolby Digital 5.1. Compare these to the high-def broadcasts though, and the disc comes up painfully short. Image depth and clarity on both the 4:3 segments and the 1.78 segments are on par with NBC's standard definition broadcasts. Quality is about what you'd expect for a collection of sketches, some of which date back several years (others are only a few years old). Some segments are presented in 4:3, but matted on the 1.78 anamorphic frame. The included sketches are: "Bush Endorsement," "Theater Monologue," "Goulet's New Bad," "Celebrity Jeopardy," "The Lawrence Welk Show," "Cheerleader-Chess," "Family Dinner," "NBA on TNT," "Inside the Actor's Studio," "Convention," "Do You Like Luxury" and "Barbeque/End Credits." Score: 8 out of 10 Video and Presentation SNL: The Best of Will Ferrell Volume 3 is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Still, for fans looking to unwind, and remember some of Ferrell's best work – this collection should provide exactly what you want.
While this third volume was originally designed as a TV special, which aired last year on SNL, it's a shame Universal didn't see fit to include more sketches that highlight Ferrell's strengths. Sadly though, this third volume of Will Ferrell goofiness runs just one hour. That said, when he's not focused, he makes movies like Kicking and Screaming or Land of the Lost. When he's focused, restrained, and guided, he's a master of comedy. I suppose that goes to show us just how impacting, and hilarious, Will Ferrell really can be.
There are some newer sketches from the past few years – work he's done as a guest rather than a cast member. But honestly, there's still so much more for fans to enjoy in this brand-new third volume. These volumes first highlighted some of his most popular sketches. Universal has previously released two volumes of Ferrell's work on SNL. His genius, pitch-perfect timing, and cast-iron dedication to the show (and his art) has won him millions of fans and turned comedian into a box office sensation (post SNL). For example, his pearly-eyed, naively bemused George Bush, a role he even took to Broadway in 2009 (it earned him a Tony nomination).įerrell is, without a doubt, one of the best cast members SNL has ever seen. During his stay at SNL he became the highest paid comedian the series ever had, and he gave birth to hundreds of dazzlingly clever characters and snappy parodies, some of which have become permanent staples of modern pop culture.
While Will Ferrell movies are often of the "love 'em or hate 'em" variety, his work on SNL is almost unanimously loved.
